Timeless

Timeless

What does our Art Director Lukas have to do with 71-year-old Karl-Heinz Küster? They both share a love of road cycling. And they are grandsons and grandfathers.

Karl-Heinz is a former professional racing cyclist who took part in the Olympic Games at the height of his career and rode major tours such as the Giro d'Italia. That was in the 1970s, when equipment, components and materials were not as well developed as they are today. Back when, even at the highest level of performance, you still rode with steel frames, cotton jerseys and caps instead of helmets. When the sport was less commercial. A formative time that Karl-Heinz still likes to look back on today.

“I often think back to my active sporting career because those were simply the best years of my life. Believe it or not, sometimes I even dream that I'm still racing."

It's hardly surprising that cycling is deeply rooted in Karl-Heinz' family today. He passed on his passion for speed, for many hours together in the saddle and the change between strenuous passages and “just letting yourself roll” to his grandson Lukas. As Art Director at Ryzon, he turned his two greatest passions – photography and cycling – into a profession. Grandfather and grandson regularly go on trips to the Bergisches Land together and enjoy the time together.

“Sometimes we even ride road bikes with three generations: grandfather, son-in-law and grandchildren. Of course I'm proud of it, I'll admit that honestly. What could be nicer than doing such tours with the family?”

Even if the materials are more sophisticated today and his motivation is now different - Karl-Heinz loves cycling today as much as he did back then. His enduring enthusiasm shows once again how timeless cycling is. We never forget it and if we want to, it accompanies us for the rest of our lives. But the best thing is: it connects us across all (age) borders.
